Last week I met the dolphins face to face. It was at O'Honaunau and Ho'okena on the Kona side of the Big Island. I faced my deepest fear and swam out into the ocean so far that the palm trees looked like little toothpicks. Way out in the middle of the most delicious shade of turquoise, I was met with the sweetest reward. A pod of 40 Hawaiian Spinner dolphins.

I swam with them for three days... for several hours at a time. On the last day, there was a group of tourists (who didn't know about dolphin etiquette) splashing and chasing after them, which sent them all out even further into the ocean. It was a lot further than I wanted to go, so I stayed put and after about 10 minutes, scary shark thoughts slowly began to creep into my mind. Instead of giving in to fear, I put my face under the water and said "aloha..." Thirty seconds later, two large dolphins came to greet me. We swam together for a while until I needed to rest.

A few minutes later, after I had caught my breath, I tried it again. I went under the water and called out "aloha...aloha!" and this time I was playfully greeted by a little one about the size of my body and several larger ones. As they swam by, something caught my eye and made me crack up. One of the larger ones, he was maybe 7 feet long, "stood up" vertically in the water directly across from me. He was facing me with his head above water ...like a person. I think he was imitating me! The little one was very playful and interactive. We swam and dove together. He kept looking back at me to make sure I was keeping up. If I lagged behind, he would slow down to let me catch up. Each time we dove, he went a little deeper, as if to push my limitations. I felt so much love and compassion while I was with them. Their eyes were so sweet and accepting....they sparkled with wisdom and understanding that they would love to pass on to us landwalkers...if only we would listen.
